About Johnstone Park
Johnstone Park is a northwest Red Deer neighbourhood shaped by relatively recent suburban growth rather than the city’s early streetcar-era development. The City’s Johnstone Park Area Structure Plan was submitted in 1999 and amended in 2007; the 2007 plan said about 47 hectares of the 59.7-hectare planning area had been developed at that point. The plan describes land bounded by Johnstone Drive, Taylor Drive and industrial lands, giving the community a practical edge-of-city setting with direct connections to major roads.
Housing is varied within a generally low- to medium-density suburban pattern. The planning document identifies detached single-family homes on both standard and narrow lots, semi-detached duplexes, townhouse and apartment forms, and a medium-density adult-oriented area. That mix means listings should not be reduced to one “typical” house: buyers may encounter conventional detached homes alongside duplexes, townhouses and apartment buildings. The plan is a development framework, however, rather than a current inventory; exact proportions, construction dates and the present condition of individual homes should be confirmed from current listings and municipal records.
Homes, schools and recreation
For public-school families, Red Deer Public Schools lists Johnstone Park and Johnstone Crossing together in the Glendale attendance area: Glendale is the designated elementary and middle school, with Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School designated for high school. The Catholic division separately lists Johnstone Park/Johnstone Crossing for St. Teresa of Avila School and St. Lorenzo Ruiz Middle School. Attendance rules and program availability can change, and a specific address should be checked with the relevant division before enrolment. G.H. Dawe School is nearby in the broader north Red Deer area, but it is not the public-school designation listed for Johnstone Park on the boundary page.
Recreation is both neighbourhood-based and close by. The City’s planning material provides for open space and public, social and recreational facilities, while City recreation listings identify Johnstone Community Sport Fields and ball diamonds in the area. Jordan Parkway is also used for City seasonal programming such as pop-up spray-park events. The nearby G.H. Dawe Community Centre, at 6175 67 Street, adds a water park, gymnasium, fitness centre and track, arenas, and the G.H. Dawe Public Library branch.
Johnstone Park sits on the city’s northwestern side, east of Taylor Drive and near industrial employment areas, so road access is a defining practical feature. From an approximate neighbourhood centre, driving distances are approximately 6 kilometres to Red Deer City Hall, 11 kilometres to Canyon Ski Resort, 2 kilometres to G.H. Dawe Community Centre, and 5 kilometres to River Bend Golf and Recreation Area. These are broad planning estimates, not precise route measurements, and can vary with the starting street, destination entrance and traffic.
From a property-search perspective, Johnstone Park is best assessed at the address level. Review a home’s apparent age, maintenance history, street position, nearby open space, school-boundary status and current competition rather than relying on a neighbourhood-wide pattern alone. Nicole can help put those practical details in context before you decide whether to move forward.
